Trainitalia has in recent years shown a good record of axing international (day) passenger trains (look into some old timetables).

Even though buisiness strategies may have changed one has to keep in mind that the passenger market changed. The well-developed network between Italy and countries in the North was probably due to italian "guest workers" who settled back, made those countries their home, were able to achieve cars that made long trips possible or profited by lowering plane tickets...
I do not believe that interest in such trains nowadays is as high in former times.
